Book and typeface designer William Addison Dwiggins first coined the term graphic designer in 1922. Graphic design’s traditional associations therefore lie in the areas of book and typeface design. Literally speaking, the term graphic design—derived from the ancient Greek word graphe, which refers to a written or drawn representation—can include any design involving visual representation. Today, graphic design’s applications are more diverse with the numerous varieties of non-print media available such as web pages or cd-roms.
